Friday Night Lights

Nice night to ride but a rough evening of pitching for my son. He was so good last time he pitched, allowing no one to score over the 3 innings he was in. Tonight he’s pitched one and got lit up for 5 runs (the limit). It’s so hard to watch him stand out there and struggle 😧 I have to go for a walk! I’m looking forward to leaving these mosquitoes behind and riding back home!

Asus Eee PC pseudo-review

The Computer There is enough speed here to do anything that I would want to do on a day-to-day simple productivity computer. There is no more wait launching applications like Firefox and Thunderbird than there is on a full-size computer. It plays back video and display flash-based video on websites clearly and smoothly. The Software The Eee PC features a perfect set of pre-installed applications including Firefox, Thunderbird, OpenOffice, Skype and Pidgin.

I can't believe the number of leaves that we have had at the new place. Liam think they are great. He sat still here while I just raked at him.

MAX - Assessed

This will be my last post specifically about the Adobe MAX conference. I promise. This year’s conference was, in my opinion, the best that Adobe/Macromedia/Allaire has ever put on. The developers that were with me seemed to be pretty satisfied with the technical content, and I was more than pleased with the creative content. I felt that the conference ran smoothly. The food was not great, but there wasn’t anything to complain about.

MAX Day Three

Responsible Web Design with Dreamweaver CS3 I took notes during this and am going to have edit this when I find them, but this was an excellent session given by the product manager for Dreamweaver that covered good web design practices in general. Designing the Obvious One of the great things about the MAX conference is that you get a large number of book authors and world-class designers. Robert Hoekman, author of “Designing the Obvious” led this presentation.

MAX Day Two

Rapid Prototyping in Fireworks This is one of the few sessions that I ended up attending that taught or demonstrated how to do something. One of the new features in Fireworks CS3 is the ability to create an entire prototype of a website as images. Fireworks, besides layers now has what it calls “pages” which can really act like web pages. One can then select areas of a page that act as buttons and link them to different pages within the project.

Baseball and Rainbows

Baseball and Rainbows Originally uploaded by cynomyso A good storm passed during the second inning of a Lincoln Saltdogs game the other night. As the storm moved out, the tarp was removed and the players warmed up, a full double rainbow broke out over Lincoln. A hot humid day quickly gave way to an evening where sweatshirts were comfortable.

Nasal Flush

This might land in the realm of TMI (too much information). After hearing a couple of stories on NPR (Got a Runny Nose? Flush It Out!) that seemed to endorse the idea of running large amounts of a saline solution through your sinuses to clear them out, I decided to give it a try. I drove down to Walgreens last night (off topic: doesn’t it seem strange when a pharmacy has a wall of tobacco products) and picked up a SinuCleanse kit that has a strange tea pot looking thing and a bunch of packets with the solution.

Gmail all the way...

I like gmail. I like it a lot. The interface is clean. It’s available from any computer. It handles attachments well. It offers a ton of space. It has great utilities available for OSs and browsers to inform you of new messages and it is very fast with search speed that you would expect from Google. I’ve expressed my dissatisfaction with browsers on the Macintosh here before. Thunderbird’s only appealing feature in my opinion is its sameness on different operating systems and Mail.

What is a social site?

I created a post a few months ago about the social web. I’ve just come to the conclusion that my definition of the social web and the one that seems to be generally accepted are different. I do not consider a site that simply allows people to communicate to automatically be part of the social web. If this were the case, the social web would be anything but new as forums have been around for years and usenet predates the web (I think) and is still arguably the king of topic-centric discussions.

One more ThinkFree Post

This is just a sample Powerpoint presentation hosted on ThinkFree. The posibilities with this are really pretty fantastic. I'm thinking about how a person's blog really becomes the one-stop shop for everything related to that person. My blog already incorporates my links (del.icio.us) and photos (flickr) along with my normal postings, but the ability to include documents (text, spreadsheet, presentation, etc) would be very powerful. Wiiiiiii!

Number 17 in Line Originally uploaded by cynomyso. It was handy this year that the playstation 3 and wii launches sandwiched my birthday on the 18th. I've really had my eye on the Wii since its announcement though. Even without the $600 pricetag that the PS3 is sporting, I've just resigned myself to the fact that I don't spend enough time playing video games anymore to enjoy the games that really need that power.
