Finished reading: There is No Antimemetics Division by Qntm 📚 One of those books that leads you to immediately want to know what others think happened in the book. Christopher Nolan could have some fun with it.

February 2026

Waffle Time: I feel that I spend a lot of time watching AI think and know that I should be doing other things while it processes. We have a guy here in town who will show up and make waffles for church fundraisers and such. He doesn’t wait for one waffle to finish, he lines up a couple dozen waffle makers …

I keep thinking about how much the playing surface comes into play with the Winter Olympics, while struggling to come up with similar situations in the Summer Olympics. Whether it is on snow or ice, the most athletic, most prepared athlete can find themselves far off the podium because they found a …

Why do we have interleague games and why in the heck are we opening the season with it?!?! Been waiting since fall for baseball. Let’s start with a great division game!

Throwing away some old discs…

January 2026

Our radio club’s education chair said he expects over 40 people for a free one-day technician (entry-level radio license) class this weekend. That’s awesome, but it’s been causing me to wonder what’s driving people to attend? Science? Public service? Weather Prep? General …

Radio is amazing. Despite a small geomagnetic storm yesterday, I turned it on for a few minutes before dinner and immediately had a short chat with someone from São Paulo, Brazil—5,500 miles away. Nothing between me and him but two transceivers and nature.

While I’ve traveled the public transit a lot here over the years, a recent YouTube video I saw mentioned the PedWay which I guess I’ve seen signs for but never checked out. It was the perfect way to explore the loop area without going outside on a frigid morning! We started at Macy’s, went through …

I brought a meshtastic node to Chicago and it was fun to see how many nodes were in place here. There was a little chatter on it last night.

December 2025

In Chicago for a couple days to celebrate NYE and I’m liking our 23rd floor hotel room view

2025 Holiday Nebraska Beer Tour complete! We drove 185 miles west to Cozad for “The Frontier Frau” and enjoyed their German brews and sausage/kraut pizza! We followed that up with Lost Way Brewing in Holdrege and finished at the Liederkranz in Grand Island.

The latest Google Year in Review is out and they just get lamer every year — at this point it feels like something they put out because they feel they have to. These were at their best nearly 15 years ago.

Old debate: Is Steam Deck a console or a PC? It runs Windows games, so it is a PC. It is a known spec that developers target, and it has a simple interface to minimize friction in launching and running games, so it is a console. Both terms attract and scare would-be buyers.

My kids are both involved in band and choir, and I love this time of year with the end-of-semester concerts. Throw in some choirs and carols at church, and it makes the 0º temperatures and icy surfaces just part of the fun :-)

November 2025

Black Friday Prep: My kids (high school and college) have brought up going out for some early Black Friday shopping, as we have done many times in the past, but I’m increasingly asking them and myself, “Why?” Black Friday specials start days, if not weeks, before Friday. Stores aren’t open as …

Flu-season = mask-season: While I hate wearing a mask, I am PRO-mask. That said, I can’t help analyzing people’s mask choices and how they should guide my interactions with them. The thin blue masks that come in a box of 100 tell me that you may be ill and trying to protect others — I would go near you at my own peril. An …

Just finished: DIGITAL FORTRESS by DAN BROWN 📚 Only Dan Brown book I hadn’t read, and I probably should have just left it that way. I’m glad I can check it off and move on to something else.

I spend a lot of time just doing the necessary things for keeping our sites up to date and functional, but every once in a while, I get to spend a few hours doing something really fun, like creating an underwater environment for this science fair site :-)

I’m VERY excited that Drum Corps International is coming back to Nebraska. It has been many years, during which we’ve primarily gone to Fort Collins to see it. Troopers, Phantom… It’s going to be an excellent show.

Nuremberg: Watched: Nuremberg 🍿 I took my birthday off and saw this. Based on the book The Nazi and the Psychiatrist by Jack El-Hai, I expect it should get some attention for the Oscars. You don’t have to see between the frames to get its warnings for the political situation today. The movie’s last …

Welp. My 50th trip around the sun is complete. It’s always fun to hear from family and friends to celebrate the beginning of another orbit. 🎂

I’ve wondered about the gap bisecting a building here in town. It looks neat, but it seems it would hurt the functionality of a covered pick-up/drop-off area when it’s raining. I figured I was missing something — but nope. It creates a waterfall right where folks are getting in and out …

Working audio for Saturday worship so being a good Lutheran by enjoying a German beer to prepare my heart, mind and liver.

Watching: Death by Lightning S1E2, Party Faithful 🍿 ”Music! Fighting! Sausages!” Nick Offerman as Chester A. Arthur

Pluribus Apple TV Series Gets Humorous ‘Bloodsong of Wycaro’ Book Tie-In Will Carol record the audiobook version? Dr. Ricken Lazlo Hale, PhD did the narration for his “The You You Are” 🤣

Paramount Skydance is working on a new Star Trek movie Are we going to have a third timeline?!

My son is at the Percussive Arts Society International Convention (PASIC) — the world’s biggest gathering of people who like to hit things with sticks. It’s been fun to follow social media around the conference. I’m sure it’s a pretty different vibe from the technology …

Planning to watch: Death by Lightning Season 1 🍿 Have been a long-time fan of Candice Millard’s books and checked Amazon to see if she has one I haven’t read, and only a week ago a brand-new limited series came out on Netflix based on one of her books. I can’t wait to watch it!

Nailed it: It’s hard to cheer for billionaires, but it’s impossible not to get excited for scientists and engineers who create something that does exactly what it was designed to do. Congrats to everyone at Blue Origin. That was awesome! :root { --yt-aspect-ratio-16-9: 56.25%; --yt-bg-black: #000; …

Casey’s pizza is gold, I guess.

Cancel Shenanigans: I’ve been a subscriber to Font Awesome at $99/year for about a decade. I considered canceling and they reduced my annual fee by $20 — forever. That now shows up as a “Loyalty Discount”. What the heck is up with that?! I’m only considered loyal after I’ve threatened to …

Watched: Zero Dark Thirty 🍿 I saw The Hurt Locker, but after House of Dynamite, I realized that I had never watched this. I didn’t realize how messy the operation at Bin Laden’s compound was, with a downed chopper and all. I felt like I was watching Black Hawk Down. I figured it was some …

Watched: A House of Dynamite 🍿 Felt silly when I discovered this was on Netflix. With all I’ve heard about it, I was sure it was in theatres. Saying that I “enjoyed” it seems a little inappropriate – but it was a good enactment of the decisions that would need to be made in a …

November 2025 Auroras

UNL Percussion Ensemble — Fall 2025: The percussion studio at the University of Nebraska had a great program the other night. Unfortunately, the streaming/video/audio in their new building isn’t performing at the level of the musicians. :root { --yt-aspect-ratio-16-9: 56.25%; --yt-bg-black: #000; --yt-play-button-bg: rgba(255, …

Chrome Split-View: Not as full-featured as the split windows in Arc, but a very welcome addition. I hope they might add the option to have more than two in the future. At work, I like to have a split tab with calendar and mail, then a split tab with the ticket I’m working on and the site I’m editing. When I run my …

Reading news on NetNewsWire. Posting via MarsEdit. I feel like I’ve been to the future and I’m back to get a hug from 2005.

@mrwilson I used to enjoy that it was the service that everything else was built to talk to; also, that it was a sort of social media, showing me what all of my friends were up to. Increasingly, it seems they are making it more difficult, if not impossible, to interface with their data. At the same …

Doing radio support for a run this weekend and at the start (kickoff? step-off?), the feels-like temp is going to be 7º.... Yikes! Time to dig out the winter gear...

What is more full of false hope than a document whose name ends in "FINAL"?

@bigzaphod my daughter was kind enough to go with me to see it at the theatre and somehow fell asleep through most of it so… maybe not as violent and exciting as I thought it was 😁

September 2025

I had a Virtual Boy when I was like 20 for a few days. I ended up returning it because it was uncomfortable/awkward to play, couldn't be enjoyed with anybody else and was expensive – that said, I remember thinking that the games were fun and the 3D effect was neat. I'll definitely have to …

August 2025

Who wants a vomiting backpack?!

@DeniseG and I've been seeing people trying to do the math and thinking that it might not be enough. I'm not so excited about the beer — but I wouldn't say no to an irish coffee in November. :-)

@rustywx What do you think about lightning in the area for the marching band exhibition at 7?

When you were a kid, did you ever fall for the "Do you want to play the game 52-card pickup?" joke? That's how I feel every time I get a PDF that needs to be re-tagged for accessibility.

Sunday ARES net… I just need a cigar to really feel like Edward R. Murrow or something…

At what point do we talk about phones as the apps that they have become by saying "I spoke with them on Phone"?

July 2025

@jw @cpultz I’ve always said the same thing… run temp Tuesday for a day in July!

Burger King Poutine… not bad!

June 2025

It always takes me a second to process questions like "do you want that hot?" and "will that be hot or cold?" at the coffee shop because I get stuck on "people drink this cold?". It seems like a nonsensical question.

MacOS 26's Liquid Glass sure looks like the "Lickable" interface of MacOS X.

May 2025

I thought this had something to do with a Die Hard game... nope. https://nintendoeverything.com/tamagotchi-plaza-coming-to-nintendo-switch/

@cpultz Looks like you might have another week of quiet :-)

@cpultz I think those happen automatically from the city's system — they even recommend using Waze (owned by Google) to keep up to date with closures. https://www.lincoln.ne.gov/City/Departments/LTU/LTU-Projects/Street-Closures-Map

@cpultz I agree — but when the Lincoln Community Foundation is offering matching funds to those who participate, organizations are silly to not take advantage of it. There was a time when it seemed that groups were thinking that November's Giving Tuesday was pretty neat and that every Tuesday …

I'm very happy to see MLB putting the camo and red/white/blue away this year for Memorial Day—opting instead for the humble poppy that they should have been using all along. U.S. fans may be confused by a symbol that forces one to reflect on the now-silent grounds where thousands died rather …

@cpultz no storm woke me up but my station reports 1.01 inches of rain. Hopefully it keeps coming for a couple days here.

@mrwilson Maybe they'll bring back the KarmelKorn that used to be on the first floor :-)

@nirak @aejolene There is an internet bridge that is supposed to be able to connect folks that aren't within radio-range of each other — but I haven't explored this much since I have LOTS of ways to communicate over the interwebs... like Mastodon! :-) …

@aejolene For sure. I'd love to see more pop up — and slowly, there seem to be. It's license-free, relatively cheap and fun :-) I've laughed at some of the YouTube videos about Meshtastic saying things like “The phone companies do NOT want you to know about this” — but it is neat to …

@nirak @aejolene Yes! I have 3 at the house — one on the north side, one on the south side and one that is portable — has a potential to be a lot of fun, but there aren't a lot of nodes around yet, so there's not much of a mesh. A friend was in LA this week and there were a LOT there

@mrwilson Looks like I'll be hanging out on the backside of route at 48th and Normal. I'll keep an eye out for you. :-)

@mrwilson good luck on Sunday!

@mrwilson I love marathon day and supporting the runners. We haven’t been given locations yet. Supposedly that’s coming today.

@cpultz volunteering for it and enjoying it 😀

April 2025

@rustywx Thanks for posting here!

March 2025

A system that requires an emailed verification code for each login, which must be entered within 5 minutes, but takes 20 minutes to send it to you, might as well be offline.

@RonSupportsYou we need something like Keegan-Michael Key’s anger translator… a fascist filter to communicate what is really being said

I’d say Happy Opening Day but MLB.TV seems to be on the injury list already!!

@mrwilson I bet that sounded wonderful in that space

@ajh have you tried removing the house from the equation? Sometimes I do a POTA-like setup in the backyard and I find that even then, the neighborhood noise is quite high compared to when I’m away from the city in a park. Frustrating, for sure.

I had the opportunity to visit the Voice of America museum near Cincinnati last spring at their retired Bethany Station. One of the exhibits that stuck in my mind afterwards was of radios from around the world, usually designed to only tune in the local regime’s broadcasts, but had been modded — …

Web services — *cough* Issuu *cough* — that make me jump through a million screens to cancel them, while detailing the extreme loss and sadness I'm supposedly going to feel without them — even though they want to increase my annual cost by nearly 150%, justified by features I have no use for — …

My wife and I had a couple of days off so decided to spend some time somewhere drivable that we’ve never been — that knocked out easy picks like KC, Des Moines, and Minneapolis and sent us driving to Wichita! We had a lovely couple days, the highlight of which was an awesome German restaurant called …

@FosseLeo Wow. Hadn’t seen one of those in a while. Yes. 50.

Sporting KC season opener! Could be a rough season, but first games are always full of hope! 😀

Installed PixelFed and, it seems to be what Instagram used to be before it was turned in to a scrolling wall of billboards and stories … it’s almost confusing — but welcome!

February 2025

@cpultz it was a lot of fun and a lot of good music but it’s a real sign of my age. I used to do 6 L and now I’m taking a nap after three. 😴🍺

End of Winter = BockFest! End of 10 days below freezing = Let’s Drink! Let’s Drink = (by my wife) let’s sort your health insurance claims … what?! 🤪 good luck with that.

I was pleasantly surprised when I asked Siri for the time of a college basketball game, without specifying men’s or women’s, and it made me select rather than just assuming I wanted the men’s team.

Since our department takes care of both live-streaming and digital signage in our school district, making it possible to watch show choir events in overflow areas, cafeterias, volunteer rooms and coach lounges falls to us. We do this for 6 of our 8 high schools and each usually lasts around 15 …

January 2025

Question-of-the-day on the lunch net here in town was "do you have a typewriter?" and it reminded me of this German one I've had since middle school — when I found it in the attic of a home we lived in. It was used the most when it served as a sort of guest book in my college dorm …

@cpultz I like the cash option, too, although I think it's not enough. I think $5 is like 1000 points, while you can get a Runza for free for 800 points, and it costs more than $5.

Some friends and I had a fantastic #winterfieldday weekend at a state park cabin. How many radios do 3 people need? 30ish? 😂 We hunted satellites, used meshtastic, erected a variety of wire, horizontal and loop antennas, used phone modes, data modes and cw/morse code. Can’t wait for next year! …

@cpultz use those points, man!

November 2024

#huskers going to a bowl! Our son is in the drumline and we’ve heard tales from so many parents whose kids went all through school with seasons that always ended in November… I’m so happy for him and the band that they get to travel this year… — As one that was college-aged during the National …

James Hoffmann has been talking about doing this for a lonnnnng time and I’m so glad it’s here. I’m excited to pick up a kit or two and learn about these processes. #coffee https://youtu.be/2t7Ba8Vr9HY

#hamradio fun tonight… aimed the yagi antenna at the ISS and pulled a SSTV image off of it. Hoping to get some better ones with higher passes over the weekend. https://www.ariss.org/

October 2024

My daughter had fall break today so we took the opportunity to go on a photo hike at a nearby camp. It seems like fall has taken forever to arrive.

Been doing the Sunday night ARES net for over a year now… here we go again…

@cpultz me too!!

Drove out of town to catch the #aurora last night and got there just in time. It faded pretty quickly after this.

@nirak i’d have to take peanut butter for sure! Some love chocolate — I’m in for PB 😋

@cpultz I was trying to remember last night. Was there a time, during the couple postseason runs the Royals had a few years ago (probably longer ago than I realize) that there were concurrent home royals and chiefs games? I seem to remember a helicopter shot showing that — but perhaps …

@Strandjunker Neither side wants geography to decide. Show me someone who wants local control and I'll show you someone who doesn't have total control. Next it will be the left fighting to retain local control while the right works to prevent women and doctors from making their own decisions …

September 2024

I don't know what the point of Google Maps' automated moderation is. We have people updating properties with information that doesn't require Gemini-level intelligence to say, "That seems bogus.”

Seems like Big Ten could at least update their logo to reflect reality

June 2024

My daughter is a living-breathing denial-of-service attack. She talks so much I can’t even have thoughts of my own. My brain just shuts down under the onslaught of words. 😀

May 2024

@alper Cool. Just curious about general impressions — things that specs don't tell you… build quality, how does it feel, how does it sound…

@rustywx Thanks. I hope that will hold. It will give everyone a reason to go home 😄

@rustywx East graduation on Saturday and hoping/planning for an outdoor party... how's that looking to you right now? Forecasts that I've seen seem to indicate overcast and a little chilly, but mostly dry. Thanks!

@cpultz Funny to read people here on-upping each other on how bad road construction is in their own country: https://www.reddit.com/r/interestingasfuck/comments/1cq4mrk/in_switzerland_a_mobile_overpass_bridgeastra/

Risking a muscle strain from rolling my eyes every time someone mentions that they "researched" something. It's clear from what they have recently discovered that they didn't even get past the result screen of their Bing search — there's no way this person went with anything …

April 2024

Glad that a game vs Messi’s Miami team brought such a large crowd last night — likely with a whole lot who have never been to a KC game before, but sure wish we could have gotten the win. The boys played well but had multiple opportunities that they didnt take advantage of and made defensive …

March 2024

@Kb9vbr Maybe for Q&A? Any fun ideas/projects for one who has collected a few 17' whips? Some sort of multi-band setup? K4OGO did an interesting video this week on co-phasing. Anything else? Thanks!

Last night’s result was spoiled by a bad call in the 90’+4’ but I still keep thinking “those new lights are pretty neat” #SportingKC

February 2024

Sad way to start morning when your #coffee grinder is broke, so you put some pre-ground coffee in the V60 and pour a little water on it to bloom — which of course it does not. The lifeless coffee which outgassed lonnnnng ago just sat there like a cup of mud. Time to find a new grinder.

January 2024

I guess I've missed out on "core memory" but I think about “core programming" a lot — things that, no matter what I learn about people and the world, I just can't shake from things I learned when I was young. There some good stuff in there like saying "Please" and …

Got comfortable handling the Sunday ARES net here in Lincoln, NE so took on the nearby Saunders county Wednesday one also… the repeater is right next to a camp near Ashland I’ve been connected to nearly all of my life and almost 1000ft above the surrounding area when you consider the hill it is on …

I haven’t said it recently, but I love mastodon. I never see the word “sponsored”anywhere. It’s not full of click-bait. Just real people with ideas and observations. Thanks for being here!

@chrisfarnham Thanks! I hadn't seen that site before. What an awesome combination! :-)

I mentioned my dislike of Grammarly always putting commas all over the place. AP style does not use the oxford comma unless required for clarification. Someone asked if you could change that — I immediately felt dumb that I had never even checked. Problem solved!

Good morning from Lincoln 🥶

I just shared the icy roads with thousands of humans, many of them teenagers trying to get to school, and everything moved along very sensibly given the conditions. There were no wrecks or fender-benders. I didn't even see anybody do something careless. Yet, I get to work, and one of the first …

@cpultz “I CAN’T GET UP!”

One of favorite local breweries seems to think that it’s June… little but Pilsners, Lagers and IPAs on the board… this is Stout Season! It’s cold and snowing outside and If it’s under 10%, I’m not interested 😁

Got my /AE tonight. Kinda bummed that there isn’t more to study for, but there is so much more to learn. At least I don’t have to be careful to not key up under 14.225 anymore 😁 #HamRadio

December 2023

@mrwilson the Venn diagram circles of "Created after Edge was released" and "Created when Browser Compatibility notices were a thing" do not even come close to touching...

Been isolated with COVID since Tuesday afternoon, but have generally felt fine outside of a sore-ish throat -- still, that doesn't mean that someone I spread it to will fare so well... so it's a great time to drive around alone, to empty parks in the winter and talk to folks all over the …

Had a pretty good parks-on-the-air activation while my son was doing some drumming at UNL this evening. 21 easy contacts and could have had many more. Was getting rave reports of my signal with only 20 watts… amazing what such little power can achieve. (Xiegu G90 & Wolf River 213” Whip) …

@cpultz Thoughts and prayers for the judge and jury 🙄

@mrwilson 😁 it does look like a Guitar Hero or Rock Band! Here’s a quick scan through 10 meters with audio with stations up and down the west coast and South America. Very busy today.

Well, when 10 meters opened up it really opened up! #HamRadio

Excited for 10m contest this weekend and solar flare wrecks the band #HamRadio

End of season Nebraska Marching Band concert is one of my favorites of the year… loads of brass and drums in a performance hall? Yes Please!!

November 2023

What’s the worst interface you deal with daily? Mine is the induction burners on our oven. Three buttons and, unless you want the highest or lowest setting, you have to push all three — one to turn it on, one to go to top or bottom of range and the third to move the setting up or down from there.

Monday after Black Friday: “ONLY HOURS LEFT TO SAVE!!” Tuesday morning: “SURPRISE! ONE MORE DAY!”, “EXTENDED!”, “YOU STILL HAVE TIME!”

@cpultz tells me I’m going to die on my wife’s birthday… Happy Birthday, Honey! 😵

@christianselig PhotoResize Pro in the app store works well, and I think it is less than $10 for a lifetime license. Ihttps://apps.apple.com/us/app/photoresize-pro/id536956866?mt=12

@kr1st I figure I can be frustrated or laugh at it... but it comes across like GLaDOS in Portal :-)

No matter how often I do it, I'm always amused by the lengths a fresh install of Windows goes to to convince you not to install Chrome or set it as the default.

@RadioGeek Still on? Mode/frequency?

Enjoying this last Friday of Daylight Time. Next week at this time it will be dark ☹️

@cpultz Ha! They must have accessibility-checked those colors, or just got lucky. 😜

@cpultz born in TX. Lived there, then OK before getting to Lincoln when I was about 3… so, I don’t remember all of that but …

@mrwilson That was a fun exercise although I was confused about the difference between stayed and visited. My most debatable point is my “passed here" for Kentucky, taken only because I think the Cincinatti airport is actually in Kentucky.

October 2023

Happy Reformation Day :-)

@ethanschoonover that looks like fantastic software. My radios, so far, have been Yaesu and I get kinda jealous when I some of these neat apps that leverage the unique features on Icom rigs. One thing I've liked about RumLog is that it can keep your log in iCloud, then it has an iOS app that …

@ethanschoonover I love to work from here… a nearby camp where I worked in summers as a college student and met my wife. I usually have the place to myself in the off-season. Logging app is RumLogNG. I bounce between it and MacLogger… they are both fine. What do you use?

@jsonstein @KJ7OFH Great radio. Display/UI feels like an early draft of what 101/10/710 have now but perfectly usable and inclusion of 2m/70cm makes it such a great all-in-one rig. Rails a must if you are toting it around!

A quiet morning operating W1AW/0 for Volunteers on the Air. A few contacts in New England and one in Belize so far. Come find me at 28.435 until 10am CDT #hamRadio

Loved the internet in the 90s? #HamRadio may be for YOU! 😁😂 No commercialization, pure joy in the ability to chat with randos around the globe, data modes that feel like hitting up PPP and Kermit… complete the throwback vibes with your favorite grunge flannel.

@mrwilson It was a quiet day for me. Always fun to see all the teams, vans and costumes. Pink Gorilla really does a great job organizing the event.

@mrwilson I've wondered about those Omaha segments. There was enough going on with radio traffic on our side of the Platte without listening to the other side. We were having issues with traffic (including team vehicles) on 310th around Murdock. Teams have to be relieved to get on to the MoPac …

@jsonstein Thank you! I love the check list idea. I did my third net last night and I have relied on a heavily scripted net — and I know that I sound like I'm reading the whole thing, but that's fine for now. I've had a couple mishaps and been grateful to have the next words right in …

Had a pretty busy weekend helping with #HamRadio support for the Market to Market Relay, the largest day-long relay race in the U.S., then taking care of a corner for the Crop Hunger Walk in town on Sunday. I managed to complete my Lincoln Craft Beer Week card in between 😁🍺

@cpultz you’re just going to have to suck it up and eat at both… Joey Chestnut eats like 1,500 hot dogs… you could manage a couple burgers… 😂

Dropkick Murphys… Always amazing ☘️

@w7voa 🙄

@cpultz how do we say “Joe’s ElCamino” without saying it?

September 2023

Spoke with stations in both Australia and Austria this morning. There’s a Dumb and Dumber “Throw another shrimp on the Bar-B!” joke there somewhere… #HamRadio

@retroist I had a teenager last night show me his walkman and tell me about the old songs on his mixtape. I should have asked if he made the mixtape himself... funny how something that was so ordinary at the time seems amazing now — having a double tape deck, cueing both up to the appropriate …

@AE4WX Thanks! I've been trying to record calls on our nightly net with pen/paper the last few nights to practice and haven't been great at it. Our Sunday evening net tends to have fewer check-ins, so I'm hoping that holds true this week!

Found out tonight I’ll be net control manager for the Sunday night ARES net here in town for the next few months while the normal manager teaches an AE class for the club. Time to start hitting the whiskey and cigars so my voice can have the proper gravitas on 146.76 this weekend. 😂 Seriously though …

Another #POTA this morning… A quick 30 minutes and 14 QSOs at K-5649, Pawnee Lake State Rec Area. I hadnt been to this picnic ground in a long time and forgot how nice it is. Trying to find best way to log (for me). Tried direct in to HAMRS on Saturday, and today tried paper. Each had their own …

@kc2ihx yes!! Won’t be anything to remember about those 24 packs other than how you felt afterwards or how long they sat in your garage before you finally dumped the rest out :-)

You know it’s going to be a good beer when the price of the single can catches the cashier’s attention and they ask you “that much?! For one can?!” 😁 It’s always time for a great barrel-aged imperial stout.

I’ve hunted a lot of POTA (Parks on the Air) but this morning I tried my first activation and it went all right! It’s so much easier to hunt when you pretty much know the call and park before you even check in, but to have everybody coming at you is quite a challenge! Thanks so much to so many hams, …

August 2023

Spent an unforgettable evening with 92,002 friends watching Nebraska Volleyball in Memorial Stadium — the largest crowd to ever watch a womens’ sporting event. #huskers

@cpultz yeah, losing the “what’s everybody saying right now” aspect of Twitter has been hard, and without a login, that jackhole, Elon has even made it impossible to view posts. My best hope right now is that Threads becomes the place that a lot of that ends up and that Threads holds true to …

Haven't talked with South America in a couple months. Was happy to see Paraguay pop up on 17m. Just worked ZP5WBM in Paraguay (Gridsquare: GG16HC / distance: 5129 mi) on 17m using SSB #hamr #cloudlog

@JosephAndriano @clew@octodon.social @ai6yr Michael Lewis' "The Coming Storm” really opened my eyes to this. I've hated going to Accuweather ever since. …

@mrwilson Some at the Weather Channel seem to agree: "Abrams argues that numbers in the WBGT may not sound "ominous" enough with critical values "only" in the upper 80 to lower 90 degrees F range." I think she's right, later in the article, that perhaps if they …

Our Lincoln, Nebraska mountain bike team has grown every year. It's a wonderful community of middle and high school athletes and their families that I'm lucky to be a part of. We've been practicing all summer and get to start racing this weekend — when it may be over 100ºF 🥵

That one was a challenge! Just worked Jeff, F4GGQ in France (Gridsquare: IN77SX / distance: 4299.2 mi) on 17m using SSB #hamr #cloudlog

The first day of school is always a fun one and we have a lot of fun at Lincoln Public Schools celebrating it with our #firstweeklps coverage. Our communications crew has been all over the city taking photos, videos and more at our buildings and I've had the pleasure of being the relay man, …

Finished my second of two 6 1/2 hour shifts driving the “free ride” golf carts at the county fair for the local radio club. So many were excited to take a bumpy trip across the parking lots in the large 6-passenger carts. I just wish I had time to actually attend the fair myself! 😁

Just worked W3PAW in Queenstown, MD (Gridsquare: FM19AW / distance: 982.6 mi) on 20m using USB #hamr #cloudlog

@r2d3522 @dynode Its not my thing either, but it seems that every aspect of radio one could be in to also has a contingent of folks that think it’s pointless and a waste of bandwidth. I figure I can try to find a way to play along, find a quieter band or shut it all off and go do something else for …

@WXFanatic Another meteorologist for you to add to your awesome list at https://rentry.co/wxlinks-mastodon : @rustywx in Lincoln, NE

@cpultz Funny how, in the past, being able to self-host your social media server would be considered a positive, but today it seems like a hurdle. I still think that having a known domain attached to your username is the ultimate blue checkmark, but I haven't seen a lot of that happening yet.

@w7voa Tricky thing with Mastadon… you could not see it on your timeline and, as far as you could tell, does not exist due to it being blocked, but does not mean it isn’t happening. Is this Mastodon’s problem? Certainly an image problem if their name keeps coming up in relation to it but does Apache …

@mrwilson Dozens! 😂 Spent countless hours with Warbirds and California Games!

Well look what showed up today… I wish it was a little cooler out. I’d love to get this new random wire on the air! #HamRadio

@cpultz I agree that it's a sad situation, but eyeballs, clicks and engagement are support and I don't see this as anything that can be supported anymore. I sure didn't want it to turn into what it has, but that's over. I wouldn't create an account on Truth and likewise, I …

@neverflw Yes! 🤓

16 1/2 years on the birdsite... today it's over. I had held on to the account the past several months thinking that maybe it could become a worthwhile place to return to, but I've lost that hope. I won't be on X.

My painful experience is that "better" rarely matters. I had a Magnavox Odyssey when everybody else had Atari, a Sega Master System when my friends had Nintendo, a Genesis when the more popular system was the SNES, an Atari Lynx when Game Boys were hot... I could keep going. The most …

@mattdsteele super cool. Knew about Spot but not about the APIs that were available. Wonder if something similar could be done with APRS — but you'd need reliable digipeater coverage over ride area. Good luck preparing for the Long Voyage!

A local brewer here in Lincoln, NE called Code, that has always used a lot of Morse code in its decorating, seems to have started to lean into this further with radio-related beer names. It’s had me thinking about other possible names… “Ragchew IPA” for a session beer, “QRT Imperial Stout” implying …

Maybe Twitter did it earlier, but it seems that you can no longer view anything without logging in. The institution I work for, when we started using social media, felt okay posting to Facebook and Twitter partly because you weren't required to have an account to see what we posted there. Now …

It was a fun morning out with local radio club supporting the mountain bike race for the Cornhusker State Games.

I don’t like these MLS vs ___________ games. If MLS wins, the other team is in preseason — of course MLS should have won. If MLS loses, the other team is much better, of course MLS lost. Last years against LigaMX All Stars was the best iteration of this they’ve had.

May 2023

I really enjoyed the first couple episodes of #silo on AppleTV+ and decided to blast through the first book from 2011, which I hadn’t even heard of. It was a fantastic story, but I’m not sure what light it has shed on the TV series. I assume the book and show are headed to the same destination, but …

@tsherrygeo Yep. The Whole XYL, YL, OM thing amongst others needs to go. I don’t expect that anybody that has used these for years and thinks nothing of them will drop them, but more and more of us can just refuse to adopt it going forward and hopefully phase them out over time.

@cpultz Bo Knows Hiccups

@mrwilson One could make the argument based on youth participation and national team performance that IF you need to qualify one, it should be the boys that get the tag.

@mrwilson Thank you. It seems that things like “lady huskers” are in the past, but then you see goofy things like this. Should be an easy fix if someone wanted to do it. The place I saw it this morning is the score embeds on the NSAA “Soccer Championships HQ” site: …

Not sure if this is a MaxPreps thing or an NSAA thing, but this is pretty ridiculous in 2023. If you’re going to call it girls soccer, then call it boys soccer. #lnk #nebpreps

@cpultz This is awesome. I love it. I'm a big user of terms like "please", "just", "simply". I also frequently add exclamation marks. I would have a lot of self-censoring to do if I were writing for them.

I wish U.S. sports would be more selective about when our Anthem is performed. The only option we have is to go beyond that by adding on extra songs (America the Beautiful, God Bless America, Lift Every Voice...) It's particularly awkward with soccer when a large number of our players are not …

@mrwilson thankfully morse (CW) isn’t part of the licensing anymore or I’m not sure I would have gotten into it, but that’s definitely something I would like to learn.

Was adjusting the rabbit ears your favorite part of watching TV? #HamRadio May be for you! 😂

@cpultz well then it is compressed as though it passed through a black hole. When moving from one end of the floor to the other, everything just becomes a piece of impressionist art.

@cpultz not being 4K is one thing but this looks like garbage. There is no reason for it. Apples new MLS coverage is 1080 and looks amazing.

Been taking off #openingday for as long as I remember, but many have been a bust between skimpy day-one schedules and early-spring weather postponing many of them. @simon I can't even remember what caused it to pop up. A bike-rental maybe? I was surprised when it did — thought "Hey! There's one of those things!" — and have never seen one again.

@cpultz maybe you’ve just lowered your standards? :-)

@fatherroderick I’ve always enjoyed your projects, particularly some of the earliest where you would walk, talk and record your surroundings… almost like Apple’s “Time to Walk” — but nearly 20 years earlier 😁 I’m glad to hear you are embracing Mastodon and look forward to more of your posts here.

@zacharybaehr I think that was back in December some time. :-)

Listening to my physician-wife dictate a note about a patient’s period to dragon is “who’s-on-first”-level comedy. I asked how it is at discerning the menstruation from the punctuation and she said “usually pretty good”. Amazing.

Thanks to all for your replies. I went back through a lot of the loggers I had already looked at along with some new ones and found Log4OM to be quite good for my purposes. @n2epe I’ve messed around with N1MM a bit and love the field where you can enter a frequency or log a contact. I just wish it didn’t look like a HyperCard stack from the 90s.

Is it too much to hope for that the #House might get past this by turning into the moderates vs the far-right and far-left, choosing a leader that has the respect of the middle majority and can actually get things done?

Hard to hear over son drumming down the hall? Is that considered QRM? 😂🥁📻 #HamRadio

@DeniseGutzmer Sorry. Serious information, but I can’t avoid hearing the NOAA weather radio voice in my head as I read your post … “And now for the climate summary… “

Got a bit muddy enjoying a #firstday hike with friends at camp then worked my way through the bands hunting POTAs, trying to be noticed in pileups with 20 watts and a random wire. #HamRadio

“Let me turn my antenna towards you” always sounds a little humble-braggy to me… I want to say “hold on a minute while I get shoes and a coat on, go outside and throw my wire into a different tree” #HamRadio

I think the only questions we ever ask our Google Assistant are those along the lines of “Are [insert food item] okay for dogs?”.

@cpultz it was great! Did my drive and walk then the sidewalk all along this side of the street and still had half a battery left. If we had more than a couple inches I might have had to switch to the second battery. It didn’t have much to throw today.

@cpultz I don’t have a two-stage but I spent some money on an battery-powered toro last winter and barely got to use it… I was too excited to go out at 6 this morning to clear things off for the doc before she took off for the day.

@cpultz Agreed. All night, my wallet and I are worried about what’s going on out there…

@cpultz Congrats on the KState win! We were at Big 10 champ game where Nebraska got blown out by Wisconsin. I was glad we were all in red as I think it saved us some harassment leaving Stadium 😂 I’m sure some TCU fans were thinking the same today.

Those couple of seconds between thinking you solved all of the RF noise issues in your home and realizing your antenna isn’t plugged in… wonderful. 😂

In the absence of blue check marks, I’d love to see mastodon instances hosted by trusted domains … to validate them the same way we validate anything on the internet. mstdn.npr.org, mastodon.NYTimes.com… This could be a tremendous convenience for institutions that manage hundreds of accounts.
